John Magufuli, the President of Tanzania, passed away unexpectedly on the morning of March 17, 2021. He was born on October 29, 1959, in Château, a town in northwestern Tanzania, he was 61 years old. President Magufuli is survived by his wife, Janet Magufuli, and their three children.

Magufuli pronounce DEAD

The death of Magufuli was announced by the Vice-President of the country, Samia Suluhu, who cited heart failure as the cause. The president had been absent from the public eye for over two weeks, leading to widespread speculation about his health. Despite claims by opposition politicians that he had contracted Covid-19, there was no official confirmation. Known for his coronavirus skepticism, Magufuli had advocated for prayer and herbal steam therapy as remedies. He proclaimed Tanzania “Covid-19 free” in June 2020, crediting national prayer with eradicating the virus, a stance that sparked both attention and controversy.

Magufuli’s legacy as a leader who underestimated Covid-19 serves as a warning. His death represents a pivotal event in Tanzanian history, prompting a 14-day period of national mourning. Following the constitution, Vice-President Samia Suluhu assumed the presidency.

Magufuli passed away | Education

Magufuli was a distinguished scholar who excelled academically. He began his primary education at Château Primary School from 1967 to 1974 and graduated from Lake Secondary School in 1978.
He pursued advanced studies until 1981. When he enrolled in a diploma program in Education Science, specializing in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Education. President Magufuli obtained his B.Sc. in Education, majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics, from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1988. He also completed his Master’s and Doctorate degrees at the same place.

Magufuli passed away | Politics

Magufuli entered politics in 1995, securing a seat as a Member of Parliament for Chato district.
He subsequently became the Deputy Minister for Works in 2000. And was also appointed as the Minister for Works in Tanzania. From 2005, Magufuli served as Minister in three different ministries: Lands and Human Settlements, Livestock and Fisheries, and again as Minister for Works. In October 2015, he ran for the presidency, defeating former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa. And became the fifth President of Tanzania. He was re-elected as President in 2020.
